Whites of West Virginia term paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Whites of West Virginia - Term Paper Example This crime can be explained through various criminology theories; strain theory and genetics theory are two which will be discussed in this paper. Drug possession, trafficking, and distribution are crimes which include the possession, selling, importing, or transportation of any illegal control substance. For drug possession, the offender must have physical control of the drugs. Drug trafficking can be done by an individual or a group of people but the punishment depends on various factors such as the location, type of drugs, people involved, and amount of drugs trafficked. These offenses come under criminal charges and can result in heavy levels of punishment. It is difficult to ever know clearly what the reason behind a crime being committed was. Criminology gives several theories which help in determining the reasoning of crimes. Two of those theories will be covered which the strain theory by Robert K Merton and the genetic theory which focuses on ââ¬Ënature vs. nurtureââ¬â¢. The strain theory suggests that ââ¬Ëno legitimate means, substitute illegitimate meansââ¬â¢. The genetic theory suggests that acting criminally is in a personââ¬â¢s DNA, maybe because they are born in a life of crime. The reasons why individuals commit crimes in Mertonââ¬â¢s strain theory are because they have a lack of opportunity, deviance, and a need to accomplish the ââ¬ËAmerican Dreamââ¬â¢ (Samaha, 2005). The causes of crime according to the biological theory of genetics are faulty genes, lack of moral development, and a limited rationality. In Mertonââ¬â¢s strain theory, the lack of equal opportunity and no legitimate means are the major reasons for crime. Merton believed that the reason why a person is forced to commit a crime is that they donââ¬â¢t get equal opportunities. In order to eliminate crime, Merton believed that more equal opportunities must be provided. Practically it may be impossible to give an equal salary cap to everyone but the society must ensure

Women and Children of Rape in Bosnia Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Women and Children of Rape in Bosnia - Essay Example If rape was not made a top priority crime, then the prosecutors would end up without any witnesses. After a protracted period of time, the victims of rape now want to lead their lives without any interference, and are not interested in the proceedings of the tribunal. They are no longer willing to testify and are of the opinion that it is highly unlikely for them to obtain justice (Bosnia Rapes Continue to Go Unpunished). A European Communityââ¬â¢s agency stated that more than twenty thousand Bosnian Muslim women were raped or sexually assaulted by the military forces of Serbia. In this regard, a UN Commission of Experts had observed that the Bosnian Serbs had implemented a policy of systematic rape against the Bosnian Muslim women. They also committed rapes in the detention camps (Bosnia Rapes Continue to Go Unpunished). A number of people have claimed that the rapes carried out by Bosnian Serbs were part of their ethnic cleansing policy. Under this policy Muslims were to be killed and thrown out of their homes and ultimately from the nation. However, the tribunal decided not to prosecute rape as acts of genocide, and most human rights advocates disagreed with this decision of the tribunal. The International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda had also concluded on these lines. The tribunal must provide counseling, legal advice and relocation arrangements, such as new identities for witnesses of rape crime before, during and after the trial (Bosnia Rapes Continue to Go Unpunished). A European Community mission estimated that nearly twenty thousand Bosnian Muslim women had been raped by the troops during the war. The Health Ministry of Croatia concluded that nearly fifty percent of women, who had been accommodated in the base camps in Bosnia, had been subjected to rape. These military forces even raped children aged six years and women aged eighty years. Hundreds of women and children were assumed to have been killed after being subjected to gang rapes. There had

In the 1800s (nineteenth century), Chinese reformers tested the practice yet it was not until the early twentieth century that foot is tying started to vanish, somewhat from changing social conditions and mostly as a consequence of against foot tying campaigns. Foot-tying brought about long lasting incapacities for the greater part of its subjects, and some elderly Chinese ladies still survive today with handicaps identified with their bound feet. The mincing steps. The affecting hips. The little nubbins at the closures of ladies legs painstakingly tucked into smaller than normal, fancy shoes. For 1,000 years, minor, bended feet were viewed as a definitive standard of ladylike magnificence in China, heading about 3 billion Chinese ladies to tie their feet throughout this time, regardless of the way that foot tying was a long, greatly frightful process that brought about seriously disfigured feet forever (Ross 2013). A few stories exist regarding how the practice began, however, the most prominent and sound says it started with Ruler Li Yu, who ruled throughout the Southern Tang administration (937-975 A.D.). In 970, the sovereign allegedly saw his most loved associate moving on a brilliant lotus platform and was spellbound by her feet, which she had wrapped in pieces of material - much like those of a dance artist moving on Pointe - so her moving showed up more lovely. Seeing the heads pleasure, other court ladies correspondingly wrapped their feet. Before, long privileged ladies received the design, and in the end it spread to all ladies, regardless of their societal position. Russells On Denoting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Russells On Denoting - Essay Example Russell (1905) claimed that Meinongââ¬â¢s theory had difficulties as it ââ¬Å"regard denoting phrases as standing for constituents of the propositions in whose verbal expression they occurâ⬠¦ This theory regards any grammatically correct denoting phrase as standing for an objectâ⬠(p 482). And the main difficulty of this theory was that it was ââ¬Å"apt to infringe the law of contradictionâ⬠(p 483). Russellââ¬â¢s critiqued on Meinongââ¬â¢s theory raised three important points: first, on the concept of subsistence. Russell maintained that if we presupposed that ââ¬ËIt is false that A differs from Bââ¬â¢, then ââ¬Ëthe difference between A and B does not subsistââ¬â¢. However, in Meinongââ¬â¢s theory since a denoting phrase was standing for an object, then, the denoting phrase ââ¬Ëthe difference between A and Bââ¬â¢ must stand for an object. Therefore, the ââ¬Ëdifference between A and Bââ¬â¢ must subsist. In this case, the self-contra diction was made apparent. As it was affirmed that ââ¬Ëthe difference between A and Bââ¬â¢ must subsist (Meinongââ¬â¢s theory), so too the preposition ââ¬Ëthe difference between A and B does not subsistââ¬â¢ is affirmed on the statement ââ¬Å"It is false that A differs from Bâ⬠. (Sutler 1967). The second counter-argument rests on the concept of existence. Take the example ââ¬ËThe King of France is bald.ââ¬â¢ Again, using Meinongââ¬â¢s theory, as grammatically correct denoting phrase stand for an object then the statement must be true. But it is a known fact, within the frame of a particular time the preposition ââ¬Ëthe King of France is bald.ââ¬â¢ does not stand or signify for any object.

A letter to the editor in the Wall Street Journal Assignment
A letter to the editor in the Wall Street Journal - Assignment Example If the customers trusted the banks with their personal information and not Bloomberg, their choice should be respected and not tampered with. Though Mr. Thomas Nides, the vice chairman for Morgan Stanley says that Bloomberg is ââ¬Å"â⬠¦assuring customers this was a mistake and that they are going to rectify that,â⬠Bloomberg should do more than apologizing. It should even be sued for infringement on peopleââ¬â¢s privacy and pay the affected customers damages as determined by courts. This is to keep off other firms from repeating such activities in the future. Another thing that should be done is that the affected firms, among them Goldman Sachs Group Inc., should put into place measures that will ensure that no data is leaked from their databases to unauthorized parties. This case involved a firm (Bloomberg) that has taken measures to protect its name. Next time it could involve a hacker or any individual with criminal activities. Thank

Peer Review Feedback Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Peer Review Feedback - Essay Example It drew my attention to the article. The opening line, ââ¬Å"I can remember the hunger I felt to obtain and share information as a childâ⬠, delivers the punch that is carried through in the opening paragraph. Another feature of your article is the detailed account of your various stages of transition presented in the work. Finally, I must say that you use simple words that make it easy to read and understand your work. Weaknesses The punch of the opening paragraphs is not felt in the later stages of the work. This reduces the attractiveness and readability of the work. There are two aspects here that I would like to point. The first is the style of writing makes the work appear disjointed. The flow is lacking. For example, you end one paragraph with ââ¬Å"during this time, I obtained my sonââ¬â¢s medical chart and reviewed it alone, and with health care professionals, while again using self taught research skills.â⬠The next paragraph starts with ââ¬Å"massage therapy career path, seemingly unrelated to the field of journalism, was full of more opportunities to collect information via research and interviewingâ⬠. There is lack of transition here. My last impression on weaknesses in the work is the lack of vivre le joi or the joy of living. You are dealing with a part of your life. I am sure you will agree that no life is worth without the essence of joy in it. It is not necessary to merely present the transition of your life as a set of data in research paper. Suggestions I do not feel I hold the privilege of making any suggestions for improving this work. Nevertheless, if may suggest there are three areas that I would address. The first aspect is reducing the size of the sentences. You use simple words, but the size of the sentences is large. The combination of simple words and simple sentences would make understanding of this work easy. I return to my criticism of the work for my next two suggestions. Use transition sentences between para graphs to help continuity in your work. The last suggestion lies in spicing up the work, such that you do convey joy in the life you led so far, and carry the hope that it goes further into your life. PORTFOLIO INTRODUCTION ââ¬â MARTA IZER I have limited experience in doing a peer review. Therefore, I do not believe that I have much to contribute to your portfolio introduction. In my opinion it is a lovely piece of work. I just loved it. In case my observations help to make this portfolio introduction of yours even better, I believe I am the fortunate one. Any contribution of mine to this work of yours would be superfluous, without repeating that it is a good piece of writing. Strengths Your portfolio introduction has been constructed well, and written in a manner that makes for pleasant reading. Going through the contents has only made me relive my childhood and the transitions that have occurred in my life. You have written in such a style that the reader will be left with a t inge of nostalgia of the years gone by. Another strength in your piece of writing is the simple language that you have used. Simple words constructed into simple sentences have made the reading of this piece of writing easy to read and easy to assimilate. The flow in your writing style is another strength. There is no abrupt change in the direction o your flow of information. One paragraph melds into the other, and so there is no sense of jarring in the reading of the work. Weaknesses Since I like the piece of work it has been difficult for me to identify
